Background
Marcelo Spina
Marcelo Spina founded P-A-T-T-E-R-N-S in 2002 in Los Angeles as a speculative platform to explore an increasingly global design culture. A licensed architect in Argentina and the United States, he has more than 18 years of experience designing and executing distinctive projects worldwide. In his leading role as Principal and Design Director, he has pushed the office to take on larger and more complex projects maintaining a speculative edge and theoretical aspirations intact.
Architect and Educator, Marcelo Spina holds a Professional Degree from the National University of Rosario, Argentina and a Master of Architecture from Columbia University in New York. He worked for Reiser+Umemoto and Keller Easterling before starting on his own.
Spina is a Design Faculty at SCI-Arc since 2001, where he is also the coordinator of the Architectural Technologies Program. He has been a Visiting Professor at the Universities of Yale, Syracuse, Harvard, Berkeley, Vienna, Innsbruck, and Di Tella among others. His work has been published and exhibited widely and he has given more than 100 lectures around the world.
Mr. Spina is a member of the Boards of Trustees at SCI-Arc since 2016. He has served in national Juries for PA Awards, Architectural League and MCHAP.

Georgina Huljich
Georgina Huljich joined P-A-T-T-E-R-N-S as partner in 2006. In her role as Principal and Managing Director and with more than 13 years of experience, Huljich has actively thrusted the office to engage in new speculative and strategic horizons having a huge impact on design and scale of work.
Designer and Educator, Huljich holds a Professional Degree in Architecture from the National University of Rosario, Argentina and a Master of Architecture from UCLA where she graduated with Distinction and was the recipient of several design awards. She has previously worked at the Guggenheim Museum, the architectural firm Dean/Wolf Architects in New York, and at Morphosis Architects in Los Angeles.
Huljich is an Adjunct Associate Professor at the Department of Architecture at UCLA where she teaches since 2006. She has been a Visiting Professor at the Universities of Yale, Pennsylvania, Syracuse, Berkeley, USC and TIT in Tokyo. Her work has been published and exhibited widely and her current research looks at strange peripheries in Europe and Asia and the way they affect notions of type, form and aesthetics.
Ms. Huljich is a member of the Board for CAP UCLA since 2015. She has served in National Juries for Rome Prize and AIA Awards.

Matthew Echard
Matthew leads with a human-centric design ethos, emphasizing both performative and holistic processes within a durable, sustainable framework.
Matthew has dedicated his education, career, and lived experience to solving the omnipresent problem facing all of us: our future home. In collaboration with PATTERNS, he brings together a team of technical SME’s in his contributions to the the studio’s most ambitious projects. With a focus on human factors and sustainability, Matthew builds unique teams focused on a collaborative, interdisciplinary work process. Matthew believes a building’s form and function are derived from many contexts, and that design should transcend from many spaces: from architecture, energy planning and water management, to security, lifecycle cost, and even future re-use. A built space should truly be greater than the sum of its parts.

Jean-Pierre Chakar
JP has extensive experience directing, managing and delivering large scale projects in the United States, Middle East and Far East. He excels with demand-driven schedules and performance-for-value budgets.
He is fluent in Arabic, French, and English.
With over 20 years of experience in structural engineering, analysis and design and acute seismic expertise, Jean-Pierre is particularly focused on computational methods and techniques that result in optimized solution, fast-track and on-budget projects. His project teams are particularly noteworthy in the use of a fully integrated BIM approach that incorporates engineering analysis, allowing for rapid prototyping of solutions and the fast visualization of engineering design results.
Jean-Pierre specializes in high rise buildings, bridge design, earthquake analysis, design of structural steel, reinforced concrete structures and high-end installations and artistic structures. He has extensive experience in the management, design and delivery of large scale, complex and fast track projects.
In addition to his professional work, Jean-Pierre lectured at various academic institutions such as MIT, UCLA, and UCS.
